GAIO explained: definition, scope and media mentions

GAIO explained: what Generative AI Optimisation is, how it differs from SEO, GEO and AEO, and why mentions in independent media are the lever that matters.

GAIO stands for Generative AI Optimisation. It means working to make sure AI assistants and AI search features know your brand, classify it correctly and name it in their answers. The goal is visibility in generated answers. A position in a results list plays a smaller role.

The most important lever is mentions of your brand in independent, editorial media. Chat assistants cite sources, and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode link to web pages. In practice, brands that external media report on often appear more easily in such answers. There is no guarantee.

This article explains the terms, separates GAIO from SEO, GEO and AEO, and shows how to proceed in practice. For more depth, we link to relevant articles.

What GAIO means

A traditional search engine returns a list of results. Generative systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode instead write a connected answer. Sources are often shown alongside it. For current questions, some assistants also fall back on a web search.

For brands, this means users read the answer first and click afterwards, if at all. If you are named in that answer, you reach prospects early in the decision process. GAIO covers three tasks:

  • Your own website states clearly what you offer and who it is for.
  • External media mention your brand in a relevant topic context.
  • Your brand is described consistently everywhere, with the same name, the same category and the same core messages.

GAIO, SEO, GEO and AEO at a glance

Several terms for similar goals circulate in the industry. There is no uniform, binding definition. The table shows how they are usually used.

Term Focus Typical question
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) Rankings in traditional search results How do I rank for this keyword?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) Visibility in generative search engines How do I get named in AI search answers?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) Direct answers, such as snippets and voice assistants How do I provide the short, precise answer?
GAIO (Generative AI Optimisation) Visibility in AI-generated answers in general Does the assistant know and name my brand?

In practice, these fields overlap heavily. The measures are similar: clear content, credible authority and mentions on trustworthy sites. What matters more than the terminology is that you know the goal.

SEO remains relevant. If you are easy to find, you are also more likely to be found as a source. GAIO adds to SEO the question of how an assistant describes you.

How AI assistants choose sources

Providers do not disclose exactly how a system weights sources. What is established: chat assistants cite sources, and Google shows links to web pages in AI Overviews. Everything else is observation from practice. It can be summarised like this:

  • Topic fit: Pages that clearly cover the topic of the question are often cited.
  • Trust in the source: Media with a recognisable editorial team and a good reputation often appear.
  • Clear statements: Texts that answer a question directly and verifiably are easier to reproduce.

You will find a deeper explanation in the article How AI search decides which links to trust. For how to become visible in Google's AI features in particular, see the practical guide to Google AI Search optimisation.

Why media mentions are the lever

On your own website, you describe yourself. An independent outlet that names your brand in a relevant context provides a second voice. Several independent sources making the same statement make it easier for a system to associate your brand with a topic. This is an observation from practice, not a documented rule.

Valuable even without a DoFollow link

A mention has value even if the link is nofollow or sponsored. It connects brand and topic in an editorial text. Readers see it, and assistants can use the text as a source. On mention.media, whether a link is DoFollow, nofollow or sponsored is decided by the publisher according to their editorial guidelines. What the attributes mean technically is explained in the reference on link attributes.

Labelling is mandatory

You must label paid placements as advertising. Google's spam policies also require paid links to be marked with rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow". A sponsored post or advertorial is a legitimate format if it is clearly labelled. Never disguise it. What defines an editorial link and how it differs from an advertorial is covered in the article on editorial links.

How to proceed in practice

  1. Define your core message. Summarise in one sentence what your brand stands for. This message should be recognisable in every mention.
  2. Determine your topic area. Decide which questions your brand should be named for. An online shop for outdoor equipment looks for different media than a provider of accounting software.
  3. Select suitable media. In the catalogue, you can filter by media type, format, niche, maximum price and SEO metrics such as organic traffic, domain rank and spam score. Without signing up, you see a demo extract with anonymised publishers.
  4. Choose a format. Available formats are editorial, sponsored post, guest article, press release and social media post. Clarify in the briefing how the piece will be labelled.
  5. Monitor the result. Ask assistants questions about your topic area at regular intervals and note whether and how your brand appears. Changes often only show after weeks.

If you already have a press release or an article, the content assistant can help. You paste in the text, choose formats, and the assistant suggests suitable channels with reasons. mention.media is currently in beta, and registration is still closed.

mention.media does not promise specific ranking results or a mention in AI answers. The marketplace provides the foundation: vetted media, transparent metrics and a fixed price structure of the media price plus 1 credit (currently €29.95 net) per confirmed booking.

Frequently asked questions

Does GAIO replace traditional SEO?

No. Good findability, clean technology and strong content remain the foundation. GAIO adds to SEO the question of how AI systems describe your brand and whether they name it.

What is the difference between GAIO, GEO and AEO?

The terms overlap and are not defined uniformly. GEO usually targets generative search engines, AEO targets direct answers and GAIO targets AI-generated answers in general. The measures are similar in all three cases.

Can I guarantee that an assistant names my brand?

No. Providers do not disclose how they weight sources. You can improve your chances by publishing clear statements and being mentioned in relevant media.

Do I need a DoFollow link for GAIO?

Not necessarily. The mention in the editorial text counts even without a DoFollow link. For rankings in traditional search, a link with a different weight can also play a role.

Your next step

Formulate your core message and choose a topic area. Then check in the catalogue which media fit, and plan a few well-matched mentions rather than many arbitrary ones.
